- Why should I consider CUNY SPS as a veteran or military-affiliated student?
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is committed to supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and military families as they pursue their educational and career goals. Our flexible, career-focused programs are designed for adult learners and help students build on prior experience, including military service.
You will have access to dedicated staff who understand military education benefits and can help guide you from application through graduation.
- Does CUNY SPS offer online, hybrid, or in-person classes?
CUNY SPS offers fully online degree and certificate programs. All courses are remote and almost all are asynchronous, allowing you to complete coursework on your schedule.
This class format supports students who are:- Transitioning from military to civilian life
- Working full-time or managing other responsibilities
- Living in or outside of New York City
CUNY SPS does not offer hybrid courses or low-residency degree programs.
- Will I need to come to campus at any point?
Most students complete their programs entirely online and are not required to attend in-person classes. You can access coursework, communicate with faculty, and use student services remotely.
Admissions and Application
- Is there an application fee waiver for veterans?
Yes. Veterans, active-duty service members, and members of the National Guard or Reserves are eligible for an application fee waiver for both Undergraduate programs and Graduate programs.
- What should I prepare before applying?
In addition to standard application materials, you may be asked to provide:
- Military transcripts (such as a Joint Services Transcript)
- Academic transcripts from previous institutions
- Documentation of military service (DD214, etc.)
- Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for VA Educational benefits
VA Benefits and Financial Support
- Which VA education benefits can I use at CUNY SPS?
Eligible students may use a range of VA education benefits, including:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill ® (Chapter 33)
- Montgomery GI Bill ® (Chapters 30 and 1606)
- Veterans Readiness and Employment ® (Chapter 31)

- How are my benefits applied?
If you are eligible, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may pay tuition and fees directly to the college. Depending on your benefit, you may also receive a housing allowance and funds for books and supplies.
- What if my VA payment is delayed?
If your VA payment has not yet been received, you will not be penalized. You will be able to:
- Remain enrolled in your courses
- Access all academic and student services
- Avoid late fees related to delayed VA payments
- Are there other financial aid options available?
Yes. In addition to VA benefits, you may be eligible for:
- Federal financial aid through FAFSA
- New York State veteran-specific programs
- Scholarships and grants
Academic Experience
- What can I expect from an online course?
CUNY SPS online courses are structured to support consistent progress and engagement. You can expect:
- Weekly assignments and deadlines
- Participation in online discussions
- Written assignments, projects, or exams
Most students spend approximately 9–12 hours per week on each course.
- Do I need to attend live classes?
Most courses are asynchronous and do not require you to log in at specific times. This allows you to complete your work when it fits your schedule.
- Will I be able to connect with faculty and classmates?
Yes. Even in an online environment, you will engage with faculty and peers through:
- Discussion boards
- Messaging and email
- Group assignments and activities
Support Services for Veterans
- What support is available specifically for veterans?
The Office of Military and Veteran Student Services is here to support you throughout your time at CUNY SPS. Services include:
- Assistance with VA benefits and certification

- Is academic support available?
Yes. CUNY SPS offers a range of academic support services, including tutoring. Students using VA benefits may also qualify for additional tutoring assistance if needed.
- Are there employment opportunities for student veterans?
Eligible students may participate in the VA Work-Study Program, which provides part-time employment opportunities supporting the veteran services team.
