Writing Center Wins Recognition

Southwestern Writing Center Association

The CUNY SPS Writing Center has been awarded a Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) Center Acknowledgement and Recognition of Excellence (C.A.R.E.) Certification. This is the sole certification administered by writing center experts for their peers. We are the 20th college or university to the receive recognition. Writing Fellows (WAC) and Tutoring Coordinator Dr. Kate Moss, Assistant Writing Fellows (WAC) and Tutoring Coordinator Dr. Erin Heiser, and the CUNY SPS Writing Center will be recognized at the 2025 SWCA Conference.

During Health Information Professionals Week (April 15–19), CUNY SPS featured a Q&A with Memory Ndanga, academic director of the CUNY SPS Health Information Management and Health Services Administration programs. Dr. Ndanga offered a look at the School’s Health Information Management BS and MS programs.

Café con Felo

A recent episode of Café con Felo, a CUNY TV program hosted by CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez in which he interviews political, business, and civic leaders to discuss how CUNY lifts New York, featured CUNY SPS Foundation board member Beatriz de la Torre, as well as CUNY SPS alums Leonard Blades, Rachel Castillo, and LaTroya Lovell.

AATE 2024 Symposium

Several CUNY SPS MA in Applied Theatre alumni presented at the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) symposium on research and publishing hosted by NYU. The attendees and their projects are: Sarah Bellatoni (’11), "Verbatim Performance as Embodied Inquiry in the High School History Classroom"; Madeline Calandrillo (’19) and Sindy Isabel Castro (’19), "In My Dreams/En Mis Sueños: Creating Bilingual Work for the Very Young"; Megan Raab (’23), "Bust a Move(ment): Applying a Liberatory Pedagogy to Dance"; Ania Upstill (’23), "Discovering Stewardship through Play: A Collaborative Approach to Using Applied Theater Techniques for Environmental Education"; and Helio A. Sepulveda (’20), Jessica Cortez (’20), Sindy Isabel Castro (‘19), Award Winning AATE Distinguished Thesis Presentations - Translanguaging, Dialogue, and Organizing."
