NPower, PerScholas, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, and The Knowledge House have partnered with CUNY School of Professional Studies to provide graduates and alumni of their rigorous, in-demand IT training programs with up to 15 free credits toward a fully online bachelor’s degree in Information Systems at CUNY SPS. Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow exists to break the cycle of poverty and inequity through education, job training, and employment. OBT’s programs serve as a bridge to economic opportunity for youth, individuals, and families in underserved communities. OBT emphasizes the principles of accountability, confidence, and professionalism to prepare participants for the workforce while developing personal and professional skills.

The Knowledge House helps young people access digital skills training, postsecondary education, and career opportunities through innovative programs that prepare graduates for careers in the technology industry: Data Science with Python, Web Development & Design, Cyber Security, and Usability Testing & User Experience Design. Their mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will uplift their communities out of poverty.

Why are the CUNY School of Professional Studies, PerScholas, NPower, OBT, and The Knowledge House working together?

The CUNY School of Professional Studies believes that all learning deserves to be recognized, whether that learning took place through workforce readiness programs, professional or military training, industry-recognized certifications, or independent learning. We have partnered with PerScholas, NPower, OBT, and The Knowledge House to award credit for prior learning to graduates of their industry-informed, rigorous, high quality programs. Program graduates will save time and money toward completion of a CUNY SPS bachelor’s degree.

Do I have to finish my IT whole training program to receive credit?

Students who have graduated from a training program will receive credit. Credit awards vary depending on the program and on the successfully completed components.

Will my credits earned at other colleges transfer to CUNY SPS?

Yes, you can transfer up to 105 credits earned at other accredited colleges to CUNY SPS. The number of credits may vary depending on your degree program.

Are there other ways to earn credits toward my CUNY SPS bachelor’s degree?

You can earn credit for college courses by taking exams that test your existing knowledge and by taking free approved courses from Saylor Academy and Modern States. You can also earn credit for IT and other industry certifications and for military training and college-level exams.

Do I have to pay anything to receive credit for my partner organization training?

No. Once you are admitted, credit for your partner organization training will be placed on your CUNY SPS transcript. There is no charge to you for the credits, and the credits are transferrable to any CUNY college.

Which CUNY SPS degree programs can I apply to?

CUNY SPS Information Systems and Business programs are participating in this partnership. To maximize credit toward your major requirements, Information Systems is recommended.

What can I do with a degree in Information Systems?

The BS in Information Systems program prepares graduates for a variety of technical and managerial positions, such as software architect/developer, network security analyst, database manager, IT infrastructure engineer, and information security specialist.

How can I learn more about what it’s like to take an online course at CUNY SPS?

Try out online learning with Test Flight. CUNY SPS understands that prospective students may be unfamiliar with online courses, so we developed Test Flight, a free, one-week online learning simulation. Test Flight introduces you to the experience of taking online classes and gives you the skills to ensure that you get the most out of your online degree program.

How do I apply?

Graduates of partner training organizations are evaluated for admission on the basis of having completed rigorous training programs, as well as their personal statement. If there is no prior college enrollment, documentation of high school graduation or the equivalent would be required at the time of application.
