How to Earn Credit for Non-Collegiate Learning

*CompTIA certifications must be valid and current (exam passed within 3 years or renewed in accordance with requirements of the administering organization)

*Training must be completed through a fully in-person or blended class and must include adult and children. Certification must be currently active.

**All six credentials listed must be completed in order to be granted the 3 credits in Youth Studies.

***All nine credentials listed must be completed in order to be granted the 1 credit in Youth Studies.

****Must be current and active to receive credit. For students who complete CDA through a credit-bearing program, we will award EDUC 200, EDUC 202, and additional transfer credit up to 12 credits.

It means that we do not currently accept it for credit. However, this page is regularly updated as new credentials are reviewed and added.

Start by checking whether your credential has a current recommendation from the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS). You should also visit CUNY Transfer Explorer to see if another CUNY college grants credit for that credential. 

If your credential is recommended by ACE or NCCRS, and/or accepted by another CUNY institution, you may submit the information to the CPL department at PLA@sps.cuny.edu for review. However, please note that CUNY SPS does not guarantee credit unless the credential has been formally evaluated and is listed on the CUNY SPS CPL page. 

However, if CPL credit for your credential already appears on your official CUNY transcript from another CUNY college, CUNY SPS will accept that credit as part of your academic record

Some credentials, licenses, and trainings may be eligible for a large number of credits. However, not all of those credits may apply to your remaining degree requirements. In many cases, you’ll only receive credit for what fits into your program—any additional credits may be considered excess and won’t count toward your degree. 

This is why it’s important to review your Degree Works report to see which requirements you still need to complete and whether the CPL option you’re submitting aligns with those remaining courses.
