Start by asking a professor, employer or mentor. Do not ask a friend or a family member. A letter of recommendation is similar to a professional reference; choose someone who can articulate your strengths and praise both your academic and personal achievements.

The Office of Scholarships highly recommends the completion of the annual FAFSA (fafsa.ed.gov – Federal Code 004765) and unmet need; undergraduate New York State residents should also complete the TAP application at tapweb.org/totw/ CUNY SPS’s TAP code is 1420. A scholarship may affect your eligibility for aid because the amount of aid a student may receive in one academic year or semester has limits. In many cases, a scholarship award is a credit towards your tuition. If this happens, the school adjusts your unmet financial need accordingly.

Scholarships decisions are based on careful, overall assessment of each student’s academic performance, as well as the additional information provided in the scholarship application. Applicants are strongly encouraged to carefully read the application instructions and to write a strong personal statement. Scholarships are offered only for the fall semester. Decisions will be sent to students in July.
