The rapid transition to electronic health systems has increased the need for healthcare facilities to hire educated and experienced health information management (HIM) professionals. It is crucial for healthcare organizations to employ a clear HIM strategy with the most qualified people at its helm to ensure secure access to data, enhance decision making, maintain financial balance, and improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.

The online MS in Health Information Management degree program aims to meet this demand by preparing HIM professionals to implement and manage information systems in complex healthcare environments. Modeled after CAHIIM standards and taught by the most knowledgeable leaders in the HIM community, the program gives students the skills to:

  • Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of computer technology and information systems
  • Design, implement, and evaluate system-wide health information systems while meeting regulatory requirements
  • Analyze the impact of privacy and security, ethics, professional standards, and the law on health information
  • Assess public policy and healthcare procedures to support U.S. and global health information management
  • Safeguard the accuracy and integrity of health information to facilitate real-time healthcare delivery and critical decision-making

Additionally, the degree offers one of the lowest tuition rates compared to any other online graduate HIM program in the country.

Career Prospects

The MS in Health Information Management online degree prepares individuals to become information management professionals who can work proficiently with clinicians and health services administrators to develop clear and effective health information strategies for their healthcare organizations, as well as carry out these strategies using a variety of applications.

Health information professionals at all levels of education and credentialing can expect to be in high demand as the health sector continues to expand. Employment of HIM professionals is projected to grow 16 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Estimated earnings for Health Information Managers with a Master’s degree is $122,195 as of February 26, 2024 (Salary.com).
