Before submitting a portfolio for credit, students must pass a one-time, mandatory course, Portfolio Development for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA 300). This is a 3-credit, pass/fail course offered every fall, spring, and summer. It may fulfill a college option requirement and does involve writing.
PLA 300 provides practical guidance, with assignments that begin the portfolio creation process. While students won’t complete the finalized portfolio during the course, they will make significant progress toward one.
Unlike other portfolios, those completed at SPS follow a course match basis. This means students know in advance which course they are seeking credit for. Portfolios are written to align with specific course learning outcomes, rather than general or unrelated content.
To enroll in the one-time mandatory course PLA 300
- Be an active CUNY SPS Undergraduate student
- Have a minimum 2.0 GPA
- Have Completed ENG 101 or earned equivalent credit
- Have a course (outside of PLA 300) that fits into your degree requirements and is eligible for portfolio credit
- Receive permission from the PLA coordinator
- Confirm the matching course for your portfolio
Things to know before enrolling in PLA 300
- You will submit your portfolio after passing PLA 300
- Portfolios cannot be created for 400 -level courses
- PLA 300 is most beneficial when taken in your second or third semester. The earlier you take PLA 300 the more flexibility you will have in choosing the course to match your portfolio to.
