Kafui Attoh, Associate Professor of Urban Studies, Appointed as Faculty Fellow by the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics

The CUNY School of Professional Studies is proud to announce that Kafui Attoh, associate professor of urban studies at the Murphy Institute, has been granted a faculty fellowship at The Center for Place, Culture, and Politics (CPCP) for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The CPCP’s upcoming seminar theme examines questions of consciousness and revolution from a wide variety of interdisciplinary approaches to which Professor Attoh plans to offer his research, which explores the rise of the “sharing economy” and on-demand mobile services (e.g. Uber, Airbnb, Seamless, and TaskRabbit) and their effects on the prospects of “worker consciousness” in the contemporary city.

“As an urbanist, my contribution to the seminar will build on a long tradition of work within urban studies that has viewed cities as incubators of both revolutionary politics and new forms of “mental life,” says Professor Attoh

This work will augment the extensive research that Professor Attoh is currently conducting on the lives of UberX drivers in Washington, DC, and will also pave the way for his new book project tentatively titled, The Idiocy of Urban Life.

Each year, the CPCP appoints only six CUNY faculty fellows and six CUNY doctoral fellows throughout CUNY to explore a specific theme, present their research, and analyze the work of members in their cohort.
