CUNY SPS Murphy Institute Faculty Honored as Social Work Pioneer
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is proud to announce that Dr. Mimi Abramovitz has been honored as a Social Work Pioneer by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Foundation for her dedication and commitment to social work. The Social Work Pioneers program was created to commemorate members of the social work profession who have contributed to the betterment of the human condition.
Dr. Abramovitz, who serves as a consortial faculty member at the CUNY SPS Joseph S. Murphy Institute and is Bertha Capen Reynolds professor at the Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work, is a diligent advocate for the civil and welfare rights of individuals residing in the United States. Dr. Abramovitz is a founding member of the Social Welfare Action Alliance and the International Network on Unemployment & Social Work, and operates in a plethora of capacities for some of the most renowned organizations and committees that lobby for human justice, such as the National Economic and Social Human Rights Initiative, the NYC Department of Homeless Services, Women’s Center for Education & Career Advancement, and Undoing Racism Project NYC. She is the author of several books, including Gendered Obligations: The History of Activism Among Poor and Working Class Women Since 1900 and The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy, and is the recipient of the Humanitarian and Leadership Award for Contributions in the Field of Social Work, Women, and Human Rights Association for International Conferences.
Dr. Abramovitz was recognized along with her fellow newly-elected Social Work Pioneers during NASW’s 60th Anniversary Celebration on October 23, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
