Following approval by the New York State Education Department, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is pleased to announce the launch of its Master of Science in Health Information Management (MSHIM) online degree program beginning in Spring 2021.

“It is imperative in today’s healthcare ecosystem that health information management professionals obtain a master’s degree to be in sync with their clinical counterparts,” said Ellen Karl, academic director of the CUNY SPS Health Information Management and Health Services Administration programs. “The MSHIM degree at CUNY SPS can be obtained with only 33 credits and in a very economical manner with CUNY’s very affordable tuition. Graduates will be prepared for higher-level health information management roles in complex health care environments.”

The MSHIM online degree program was designed to meet healthcare facilities’ growing need for highly qualified HIM professionals. Developed following standards set by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), and taught by the most knowledgeable leaders in the HIM community, the program will prepare individuals to become information management professionals who can work proficiently with clinicians and health services administrators to develop clear and effective health information strategies for their healthcare organizations, as well as carry out these strategies using a variety of applications.

With the launch of this program, CUNY SPS joins a number of schools nationwide offering graduate degrees in health information management, a growing sector known for its job opportunities and robust salaries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest report in September 2019, the medical and healthcare management field is anticipated to grow more than 18% over the next decade.

As the newest online offering in CUNY SPS’s portfolio, the MSHIM program allows students juggling work and family commitments to take classes on their own schedule and time. In addition, the program provides an accessible and low-cost path to a degree: it features the lowest tuition rate of any online graduate HIM program in the country, and all online students pay CUNY SPS in-state tuition regardless of where they reside.
