Lauren A. Mahoney, PsyD, is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the CUNY School of Professional Studies and Queens College. Since joining CUNY in 2018, she has taught courses in cognitive psychology, learning and memory, human development, biological bases of behavior, psychopathology, research methods, coping with chronic illness, and death and dying. In her teaching, she encourages students to think critically about psychological research while also considering how psychological concepts apply to everyday life, relationships, health, and human development.

Dr. Mahoney has worked as a school psychologist with New York City Public Schools for more than a decade. Her work includes psychological assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, behavioral consultation, and transition planning for students with learning, developmental, behavioral, and emotional needs. She is a New York State Licensed Behavior Analyst and a Diplomate in School Neuropsychology.

Dr. Mahoney is also a postdoctoral psychologist at Authentically Living Psychological Services, where she provides psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. Her clinical interests include anxiety and depression, grief and trauma, women’s mental health, ADHD and autism, caregiver burnout, chronic illness, identity development, and relationship concerns. She particularly enjoys working with young adults, caregivers, women navigating reproductive and hormonal transitions, including menopause and perimenopause, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. She is especially interested in how people adjust to loss, illness, changing relationships, and major life transitions. Her clinical work draws from cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, existential, and relational approaches. She also holds advanced certifications in clinical trauma, grief-informed care, ADHD, and mental health and nutrition.

Her scholarly interests reflect the range of her clinical and educational work, with a particular focus on how people adapt to loss, illness, neurodivergence, changing relationships, and major life transitions. Dr. Mahoney has published in Contemporary School Psychology and is committed to helping students understand both the science of psychology and its relevance to the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
