All students interested in mental health support at Student Counseling Services begin with an Initial Consultation. This is a 60-75 minute telehealth appointment where you will meet with a mental health professional to discuss your needs and your preferences. During the Initial Consultation, you will complete some online paperwork and you will be asked to discuss:
- What concerns brought you to reach out to counseling
- Your history with these concerns
- Your mental health and health history
Once the evaluating clinician learns about your concerns, they will discuss what services are available through SPS and off-campus, with a focus on what services are right for your situation. Different challenges require different approaches. The evaluating clinician will likely make recommendations about services they think will best meet your unique needs.
If you like the clinician’s recommendations, they will support you in taking next steps. If you do not like the clinician’s recommendations, you are under no obligation to follow the recommendations or continue your interaction with SPS Student Counseling Services. All of our services are completely voluntary.
To schedule a consultation, please email counseling@sps.cuny.edu.
Email and Confidentiality
When you email, please remember that email is inherently not a confidential medium. We recommend that you use email only to inquire about services and to make scheduling requests, not as a place to disclose details about your mental health situation. If you email, Student Counseling Services staff will follow up to schedule a more in-depth synchronous conversation.
