Urban Park Leadership Program

"The workflow of the program was ideal for busy professionals. It presented meaningful learning opportunities, but the time commitment did not detract from my professional responsibilities. Often times, the content would overlap with real-world problems of practice."

Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Warwick, RI

What drew you to the field of urban park management? What is the most gratifying aspect of your job?

While I began my career as an educator, the same values and commitments drove me to transition to the field of urban park management. It is an honor to create opportunities for others to enjoy and learn in some of my state's most well-known parks.

Why did you choose the Urban Park Leadership Program, offered by the Central Park Conservancy and the CUNY School of Professional Studies?

Being new to the field, I was looking to build my knowledge specific to parks management. The program curriculum jumped out at me as did the chance to learn from the Central Park Conservancy staff. This professional learning experience has exceeded my expectations. My professional skill set has been enriched by both the content and new professional network that I have developed as a result of this program.

What is the most significant impact you will have on your park as a result of applying what you have gained from this program?

I have applied several concepts from this program to my work. Skills learned from the project management module are currently being applied to maintenance projects at my ice arena and pool. I will also be using the human-centered design module to facilitate projects with parks groups.

Tell us about your experience with completing the Leadership Program as a fully online experience.

While I was disappointed to not visit New York City in person due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the staff members at the Central Park Conservancy and CUNY SPS did a masterful job in transitioning the program to an online format. The best part, aside from the content, is that the program staff was still able to cultivate meaningful networking opportunities.

How did you balance participating in the Leadership Program with the priorities of your career and personal life?

The workflow of the program was ideal for busy professionals. It presented meaningful learning opportunities, but the time commitment did not detract from my professional responsibilities. Often times, the content would overlap with real-world problems of practice.

What was your favorite unit in the program? Why?

I liked the design thinking unit. It presented a vehicle to pull together many of the other tools.

What advice would you offer someone who is considering applying for the Urban Park Leadership Program?

I would encourage others to apply to this program. It was a great learning experience that enhanced my skill set.
