Advanced Certificate in Project Management
For those that aren’t aware, can you explain the field of Project Management?
To me, the field of project management is more than just being a robot and getting from point A to point B. It’s building those relationships so you can get the project completed quickly and effectively.
How does your current work relate to this field?
Working for CUNY CIS, I have come across many upgrades, installs, and other IT functions where I’ve had to use Project Management Professional (PMP) skills.
What is the most gratifying aspect of your job? What is the most difficult aspect?
The most gratifying has to be when a project is completed and we see all the hard work pay off, such as seeing the faculty, staff, students using a service we provide. The most difficult aspect is getting everyone to work together; not because we don’t get along but because we are all very busy and it’s hard to get the people you need in a room.
Why did you choose to pursue the Advanced Certificate in Project Management? Why at CUNY SPS?
I wanted to focus on my PMP skills for my job. I’ve received all my degrees from CUNY and needed something flexible. My wife had just gotten her master’s degree via CUNY SPS so I was turned on to it through her.
In which ways have you benefitted from enrolling in a fully online degree program?
I’m able to do the work at my pace. I don’t have to worry about losing 30 minutes class (sometimes more) traveling to and from and sitting in a classroom.
Which courses/aspects of the program have you enjoyed the most thus far?
So far, I have had only one course but the fact that it was very easy to navigate and do my work was a big plus. It felt like I was with other students during the group project, which was fun.
What is your relationship like with other students/professors?
The professor always answered our questions quickly, and the other students were always quick to talk and share ideas.
Which professional and/or personal goals would you like to achieve upon graduating from the program?
I want to be able to pursue my PMP certificate.
How has this program helped you become a better project manager?
It’s provided me with a filler for the gaps I had in my project management skills, showed me what I was missing, and helped me fine tune what I already knew.
What advice can you give to someone who is considering returning to school for an Advanced Certificate in Project Management?
It’s a great program if you are considering going for the certificate in PMP or even to just hone the skills you already have.
