The Advanced Certificate in Health Information Management at the CUNY School of Professional Studies is a fully online, asynchronous program designed for flexibility and convenience. This four-course certificate provides a comprehensive introduction to the Health Information Management (HIM) profession, offering both the theoretical foundations and practical skills needed to navigate today’s rapidly evolving healthcare data environment.

Whether you are looking to advance in your current role, transition into the HIM field, or deepen your knowledge of healthcare data, privacy, and information systems, this program is designed to support your goals. The certificate can be completed as a standalone credential or as a pathway into the Master of Science in Health Information Management at CUNY SPS. 

What You’ll Learn

Upon completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the evolving healthcare ecosystem and understand how organizational, regulatory, and technological forces shape HIM.
  • Analyze and leverage health information technologies to improve patient care and organizational outcomes.
  • Assess privacy, security, ethical, and legal considerations that govern the handling of protected health information.
  • Apply quality improvement and performance measurement methodologies to promote data-driven decision-making in healthcare environments. 

Program Structure

The certificate consists of four fully online asynchronous graduate courses (12 credits) that should be completed during the fall and spring semesters.

  • HIM 605 – Healthcare Information Systems
  • HIM 610 – Health IT Privacy, Security and Legal Issues
  • HIM 620 – Performance Improvement Strategies in Healthcare

Career Outlook

As the healthcare industry continues to rapidly expand and digitize, the need for qualified health information professionals is higher than ever. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for medical and health services managers—including roles in health information—will grow 29% over the next decade, with an estimated 61,400 job openings annually. 

Graduates will be prepared for roles such as:

Completing a Graduate Certificate Program

Graduate certificate courses must be completed within one year with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Note: Students who are awarded the Advanced Certificate in Health Information Management and later apply for admission to the MS in Health Information Management will be required to meet any additional requirements for the MS HIM program. 

Admissions Criteria

To qualify for admission, applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrate a GPA of 3.0 or higher (applicants below 3.0 may be considered with additional evidence of readiness).
  • A personal statement identifying your educational/professional goals and the purpose for applying to the Advance Certificate in Health Information Management
