The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is pleased to announce that the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation (the Foundation) has awarded two additional grants to the CUNY SPS Foundation.
These renewal grants, which will help support and sustain student success, include $150,000 toward the Petrie Emergency Grant Fund and $50,000 for the Petrie Nursing Scholarship.
“This sustained support from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation will significantly impact the academic success of hard-working CUNY SPS students who have hit a bump in the road on their academic journey,” said Blake Foote, chair of the CUNY SPS Foundation Board. “The Foundation recognizes the vulnerability of CUNY SPS students who juggle many family responsibilities, work shifts, and increasing costs of living as they pursue their studies. The entire CUNY SPS community is grateful for this generous, targeted investment in our students' futures.”
“With these generous gifts, CUNY SPS can continue to offer much-needed assistance to students who may otherwise be struggling financially,” said Jennifer Grace Lee, associate dean of enrollment management and student services at CUNY SPS. “We are hugely appreciative of the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation for sustaining their emergency grant fund, as well as their nursing scholarship program, which enables many of our talented nurses to graduate debt-free. I know firsthand how vital this funding is for our students’ success, and I can’t wait to see how another generation of CUNY SPS students will flourish with the Foundation’s support!”
The Petrie Emergency Grant Fund, which was first funded by the Foundation in 2019, provides emergency financial assistance to eligible students who are experiencing hardship which could adversely affect their educational success.
Students who demonstrate genuine need and may not be able to continue their studies due to financial hardship are eligible to apply for the Emergency Grant, and those awarded the grant may receive up to $1000 per academic year. With the Foundation’s latest donation of $150,000, more students who may be struggling financially will be able to receive this short-term aid.
Alongside this, the Foundation has renewed the Petrie Nursing Scholarship with an additional grant of $50,000, ensuring that incoming CUNY SPS nursing students may also benefit from this much-needed tuition support.
Launched with a grant by the Foundation in Fall 2018, the Petrie Nurse Scholarship provides 100% tuition assistance through degree completion for students enrolled in the CUNY SPS online bachelor’s degree program in nursing (RN to BSN) who previously earned a nursing applied science degree (AAS) from a CUNY community college.
The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation is a private, independent grantmaking foundation that began active operation in 1998. Their grants support colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations and individuals as they work to improve education and career outcomes for low-income New Yorkers. The Foundation’s goal is to ensure that all New Yorkers, particularly those from marginalized communities, have the resources and opportunities needed to reach their goals in school, work, and life.
As New York’s leader in online education since 2006, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) offers the most online bachelor’s and master’s degree options at the City University of New York, and serves as the University’s only undergraduate all-transfer college. With 26 degrees and numerous other non-degree and grant-funded workplace learning programs, CUNY SPS meets the needs of adults who wish to finish a bachelor’s degree, progress from an associate’s degree, earn a master’s degree or certificate in a specialized field, and advance in the workplace or change careers. Consistently ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report for its online offerings, and noted for its soaring growth and enrollment, CUNY SPS has emerged as a nationwide leader in online education. The School’s renowned and affordable online programs—which offer in-state tuition to all students regardless of where they live—ensure that busy working adults may fulfill their educational goals on their own time and schedule.
