The CIED is pleased to partner with the Asian-American/Asian Research Institute (AAARI) and the Brooklyn College AANAPISI Project (BCAP) to present a screening of Danielle Ayow's documentary film "But You’re Not Black".

The film opens on Toronto’s Caribana, which Danielle, a Chinese-Caribbean-Canadian woman, has attended most of her life. The festival represents her parents’ Trinidadian culture, but Danielle is also Chinese, and visibly so. The film challenges perceived correlations between race and culture, asking the audience to examine their assumptions about cultural identity while Danielle navigates hers.

This short documentary will be followed by a discussion with BCAP members, led by Prof. Yung-Yi Diana Pan, Dept. of Sociology, and Director, American Studies Program, Brooklyn College.

This session will be recorded and made available on the AAARI website. Auto captions are available.

This event is open to all CUNY SPS students, faculty, staff, the Brooklyn College BCAP members, and members of the AAARI.

Please use your CUNY email address when registering. Registrations made with personal email addresses will be subject to verification.
