Faculty with Heart: Dr. Lilly Mathew

The CUNY SPS Nursing Pulse was fortunate enough to speak with Dr. Lilly Mathew, Associate Professor of Nursing Informatics. She shared some of what guides her life and professional practice.  

Please tell me about yourself. 

I have been an RN for 21 years and I absolutely love nursing. I am married for 18 years and have a 10 year old son. I come from a family of many health care professionals.  

What brought you to CUNY SPS Nursing? 

I absolutely believe in online education and wanted to dedicate myself to teaching online on a full-time basis.  

Tell me about your research interests and why you are passionate about this topic? 

My research interest primarily focuses on designing and developing educational learning experiences using technology targeting all learning domains for improved outcomes in both patients and nursing students.    

What do you want the public to know about your research? Why is your topic important? 

Currently, I have designed and developed a virtual simulation program to promote cultural competence in caring for Puerto Rican Patients with diabetes using a community based participatory research approach.  

What is your favorite part of your job? 

Flexibility in teaching students anytime.  

What is the most challenging part of your job? 

Providing individual feedback to all students in a weekly manner in all courses.  

What do you like most about mentoring students? 

It is an amazing experience to see the benefits of mentoring students and to see them professionally grow and succeed in life.  

How do you like to spend your free time? 

If any, I play with my son.  

What is the most helpful advice you’ve received? 

Love others unconditionally. 

When did you start becoming interested in Nursing? 

Watching my mom perform nursing procedures when I was a little girl.  

Growing up, what did you want to be? 

A physician or a nurse. 

Who has influenced you the most in life? 

Jesus Christ and his unconditional love and sacrifice for all.  

If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would it be?  

Mother Teresa 

If you won the lottery, what would you do? 

Pay all my debt, quit my job, and travel the world with my family.  

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? 

Switzerland. 

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? 

Fried Vegetables.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
