Class of 2023

"These skills have enhanced my ability to appreciate diverse perspectives and foster more meaningful and effective interactions in the workplace."

What were some of the most defining aspects of your time at CUNY SPS?

Some of my most defining moments at CUNY SPS include sharing my prior business knowledge and experiences with classmates to enrich their learning. I found great fulfillment in connecting human relations theories to real-world circumstances, making these concepts more practical and memorable. Additionally, it was a true honor to deliver the 2024 commencement speech to the graduating class.

What is the best piece of advice or most important thing you learned at CUNY SPS?

One of the most important lessons I learned at CUNY SPS was the value of respecting and appreciating the diverse perspectives I encountered. CUNY SPS is a microcosm of individuals from various walks of life, all thriving within the same cultural environment and united by the common goal of pursuing education. I deeply valued the opportunity to connect with younger and older students, immigrant and veteran students, and those from underrepresented groups—all coming together for the shared purpose of learning and growth. Embracing this diversity was both enriching and inspiring.

Who influenced you the most?

Professor Lianna Scull had a profound influence on me during my time at CUNY SPS. She was a steady voice of reason and clarity, especially when the concepts became complex. Her detailed feedback and insightful perspectives consistently challenged me to think creatively and explore ideas beyond the obvious.

I am also grateful for Dr. Bonnie Oglensky. I began the program feeling both eager and anxious, carrying my own preconceived notions of what human relations encompassed. However, Dr. Oglensky quickly reshaped my perspective. She consistently urged me to "put on my human relations hat" and examine situations from all the angles available to a practitioner, cultivating a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the field.

Dr. Melanie Lorek for her leadership and guidance in the Human Relations & Sociology Club, and to Parshotam Lal for his drive and determination in getting the club off the ground and consistently running. Dr. Danette Brown also had an impact on my growth by challenging me in areas I didn’t even realize needed development. Her guidance pushed me out of my comfort zone, enabling me to discover and refine skills that have been invaluable in my academic and professional journey. Each of them played a meaningful role in shaping my experience at CUNY SPS.

How has CUNY SPS influenced your overall career?

In my current role as a Coordinator in Research and Development within the pharmaceutical industry, my Human Relations degree has greatly influenced how I engage with and understand my colleagues. The program equipped me with essential tools such as emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and mindfulness of implicit biases and stereotypes. These skills have enhanced my ability to appreciate diverse perspectives and foster more meaningful and effective interactions in the workplace.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is embracing the role of a servant leader, ensuring that my colleagues have everything they need to excel in their roles. Supporting their success and fostering an environment where they can thrive brings me immense satisfaction.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I aspire to be a well-established Industrial-Organizational Psychology practitioner, utilizing my expertise in human relations, project management, and change management to support my organization's developmental needs. Additionally, I hope to give back by sharing my knowledge and experience as an I/O Psychologist in the role of an adjunct lecturer, helping to inspire and guide the next generation of professionals in the field.
